Our Operation
We are located northwest of Yankton South Dakota. Our situation is probably a little different than others. We are fortunate to be in an area with a high resource base. There is an abundance of high quality feed available for use but we prefer to manage our cattle on a low resource base. All of the purebred cattle run with and are managed with the commercial herd. Our logic is simple; we want to raise cattle that will work for us. If our cattle can work in our environment, they should work even better in yours. We decided a few years ago to stop creep feeding calves. It was a big change for a few years, but it is allowing us to better identify the cows that have good maternal traits and cull out those that don't.
Our main goal is to raise good solid functional cattle that will be profitable for commercial producers. We want our cows to have nice square udders with correct teat size and placement. They should calve unassisted, raise a good calf, and breed back on time every year. We expect just as much from our bulls. They should be muscular, masculine, aggressive breeders, with quiet dispositions. Their calves should be born easily, with manageable birth weights, high vigor, and be profitable through all phases of production.
